As part of the Great Basin Culture Area, the Chemehuevi (a Mojave term meaning those that play with fish), a branch of the Southern Paiute, have been persistent occupants of the Mojave Desert. Known as Nuwu (the People), they have been nomadic residents of the Mojave Desert’s mountains and canyons and the Colorado River shoreline for thousands of years.
Hostilities with the neighboring Mojave scattered the people, now numbering no more than a few hundred people. By 1885, they had reunited in the Chemehuevi Valley. Legend depicts the first to return as roadrunners racing down the valley to a mesquite forest, their pods bursting with sweet beans.
Federal authorities established the Chemehuevi Valley reservation in 1907. This protected some 36,000 acres of Chemehuevi's homeland. But, the Tribal members were soon relocated to the Parker area, and their status as a Tribe was taken away. With 1929 came the formation of the Metropolitan Water District, and in 1935, Congress authorized the acquisition of as many reservations as necessary for the Parker Dam Project. In 1940, the floodgates closed, and nearly 8,00 acres of traditional Nuwuvii lands drowned.
From the early 1940s, a persistent desire for recognition and self-determination fueled the struggle to achieve Federal recognition. Thirty years later, the Nuwu was formally reinstated as the Chemehuevi Tribe on June 5, 1970. Today, the reservation comprises approximately 32,000 acres of trust land that includes thirty miles of Colorado River Frontage.
The Chemehuevi coil baskets of willow and devil’s claw are considered among the finest in the world. Sadly, the cultural knowledge and techniques required to weave these baskets are in danger of dying. The Tribe is planning a cultural center that would exhibit baskets and other cultural materials and provide programs to spark the expertise and desire to continue the craft.
Storytelling, song, and dance testify to a rich cultural heritage. Annual migration cycles along with the Colorado river and through the Mojave and the seasonal movement of animals were recorded in songs. The Salt Song celebrates cycles of life and death and has, for generations, set the Chemehuevi apart from other tribes of the area.
Images pecked into large boulders located at spirit rock and throughout the region speak reverently of mountain sheep, turtles, trails, and spirits. Many of these images have been broken away and stolen. Some have been reclaimed. All need protection.
The Tribe purchased Havasu landing Resort in 1974, and it has grown into a self-contained community offering many amenities: year-round living, a full-service marina, a casino, a grocery store, and deli, campground and RV park, restaurant and lounge, a 5,000-foot paved runway for small planes, and a tour boat for excursions to Lake Havasu City, Arizona, home of the London Bridge.
Flooding of the river bottom ended traditional communal flood plain agriculture. Currently, the Tribe has 200 acres of land under experimental agricultural production. The primary focus has been to improve soil quality through nitrogen fixation with alfalfa. Mesquite trees have also been replanted in significant numbers to sustain traditional plant species. Another thousand acres are available for an agricultural lease.
